Parts of the brain that are associated with contemplation and emotion are automatically sparked when viewing art; areas that activate our pleasure and reward systems are also being engaged. Experiencing art decreases stress levels by reducing concentrations of the stress hormone, cortisol. However, it seems the biggest benefits come from making art. Studies have shown that producing visual art improves psychological resilience and increases brain activity overall.
